GREENE KING PUBS FUEL FANCY DRESS RACERS IN KIMBERLEY

By Matt Furnell, 14/07/2011 9:07 am

Running through the town centre with a decorated pram, stopping for a swift half at each pub along the way, is not the usual way to spend a Sunday afternoon. But for one day each year, the Kimberley Pram Race sees residents of the Nottinghamshire town do just that, all in the name of charity.

On Sunday (10 July) 35 runners took part in the annual tradition to raise money for Help For Heroes.  And to fuel the fancy dress mad dash, five Greene King pubs supplied free Carling for the runners as they raced to the finish line, competing for the title of ‘best dressed pram’.

The race, which raises at least £1000 annually, has been going since 1973 and in recent years has been supported by Greene King, with free beer for the competitors at each of their five pubs along the route, which are The Lord Clyde, The Gate Inn, The Queens Head. The Cricketers Rest, The Nelson and the Railway Inn.

This year Greene King also provided a curtain-sided lorry as a stage for local musicians who entertained the crowds throughout the afternoon.

Event organiser Ian Campbell said the pram race brings the whole of Kimberley together and Greene King’s support is invaluable to the event.

“Without the beer there is no pram race. We appreciate the support of Greene King and the pubs who kindly serve the competitors. It’s an important charity event, with all the money raised coming solely from street collections on the day. This year, all funds raised will go to Help For Heroes.”

Rick Nicholls, business development manager for Greene King, said: “All the pubs involved get into the spirit of the day and we’re glad to support such a popular event. The pram race is always one of the busiest trading days for pubs in Kimberley, which goes to show what a community event it really is.”

We Salute you! Rothwell Landlady in Vietnam cycle challenge!

By Matt Furnell, 05/10/2010 5:12 pm

Local landlady, Justine Gregory knows a thing or two about hard work and determination as for the last 6 years she’s been independently running her own successful pub and restaurant, ‘Salutê’ at the White Swan in Rothwell.   And if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, she’s now turning her hand to a 323 mile cycle ride through Vietnam and Cambodia!

Motivated by the passing of her Father, a keen cyclist; wanting to get fit and approaching the big four-O, Justine has set her mind to a challenge of a lifetime and is aiming to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.  The cycle challenge will start in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam and finish 10 days later in Angkor Watt, Cambodia from the 8th October.

Speaking about Justine, Business Development Manager for Greene King, Barrie Robinson said, “Justine has a huge amount of commitment to her business and has shown the same motivation and passion in the preparation for her cycle challenge so she’s sure to succeed.  We’d like to wish her all the best luck and would urge everyone to support her on her worthy journey ahead!”

Salutê at the White Swan is a neighbourhood Italian Bar & Restaurant serving quality rustic Italian food with a vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Justine is passionate about making customers feel welcome and delivering quality food with excellent service.  She says, “we aim to create a neighbourhood venue, inspired by the Italian table where people relax, share and enjoy each other’s company”.

Stage 3 starts on 23 February and travels from Stade de France in Paris to Twickenham, clocking up 410 km in the process. Lawrence will begin the challenge himself on Friday 12th  February in Rome, when he will depart on a gruelling 1,330 Km cycle up the West coast of Italy, and through to Paris where he will join the Greene King team for the third stage that takes him through to Twickenham. The Cycle Slam will then move on to Wales eventually covering all the Six Nations stadiums during the tournament.

Speaking about the challenge, marketing manager for Greene King IPA (the official beer of England Rugby), Keith Ironside said, “This is a huge opportunity to achieve a great deal of fundraising for these amazing charities.  The whole team have been training throughout all the cold weather and are really getting prepared for this fantastic event and getting behind Lawrence, Sport Relief and the Dallaglio Foundation.  We’re looking for sponsorship and if anyone would like to help they can donate on www.justgiving.com/team-greene-king.  Everything will be gratefully accepted and appreciated”.
