A pub has embraced the popularity of street food culture by creating a whole new menu with the Greene King Pub Partners food team – and it’s going down a treat with customers.
Bob Betts has run Hampshire pub The Wyvern in Church Crookham for the past eight years on behalf of multiple operator The Healy Group.
The pub is close to Bob’s heart as he and wife Charlotte have raised three children while running the pub and even got married there.
“The pub is a big part of us now to be fair,” he says. “We started off 12 years ago with two members of staff. Now we’ve got 25!”
The pub closed briefly earlier in the year to allow for an investment by Pub Partners that saw a glasshouse extension added on that has allowed an additional 45 covers. Bob has also reinvigorated the pub’s menu and created a bespoke range of options that take advantage of the Greene King food supply.
More than one in 10 Greene King Pub Partners pubs now choose to get some or all of their food through the Greene King supply chain, with The Wyvern not only choosing to make the most of the easy access but also using it as a springboard to create a new offering for their pub.
As well as all the traditional pub favourites, The Wyvern’s menu now also boasts street food options ranging from fajitas and burritos to lamb koftas and poutine (Canadian-inspired topped fries).
“It’s been fantastic,” Bob said. “We’ve really jumped in and embraced the street food culture and have created our own offer, working with Hannah Mills in Pub Partners to build our menu.
“We used the Greene King food supply before but now have become much more proactive and created much more of a bespoke menu.”
The Wyvern is a pub welcoming in all the community, with Bob saying a look around the bar would reveal people aged from 18 to 80.
“Our USP is that we’re a pub first and foremost,” Bob says. “We still have that traditional British boozer feel, but smart. We get a real cross-section.”
