What Training Do You Get With A Greene King Pub Franchise?

Ever find yourself nursing a pint in your local, daydreaming about swapping your 9-5 and swivel chair for the chance to run your very own pub? Then, just as quickly, talk yourself out of it because - wow - running a pub sounds like a lot to take in.

The thing to remember is that an expert in anything was once a beginner and with a Greene King franchise you’re never on you own. From day one, you’ll follow a step-by-step training journey that builds your knowledge and confidence at a pace that works for you. Your journey starts with online training, moves on to an insight-packed four-day Franchise Welcome induction and finishes with hands-on learning in your own pub before opening day.

What Types of Franchise Does Greene King Offer?

Before looking more closely at the training itself, it’s worth knowing that Greene King offers two franchise routes, each with its own personality and style of operation.

Nest Pubs are lively, drink-led venues often located on busy high streets or in bustling areas. They focus on great value drinks, a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of live sport. Food is deliberately straightforward, with pizzas on the menu to keep things easy to manage behind the bar.

Hive Pubs are designed to be the dependable local at the heart of the community. They serve a great selection of food, host entertainment and show live sports, making them ideal for everything from an after-work drinks, to Sunday lunch with family.

Because the two models operate slightly differently, the training programme is tailored accordingly, ensuring you learn the skills most relevant to your pub type.

What Happens Once I’ve Been Accepted?

Once you have been accepted as a franchise partner, you’ll be introduced to the training team who will guide you through the next stage.

Before attending any in-person training, you’ll get started on Greene King’s remote learning platform, Attensi. This is an interactive, game-style training platform on which you’ll work through a series of modules designed to give you a solid grounding in the practical side of running a pub - from stock control and food safety to managing cash flow. The platform is easy to use and allows you to build your knowledge at your own pace.

Will I Have Someone Experienced To Guide Me Through Training?

Yes! And this is one of the most valuable parts of the process. Before your induction begins, you will be paired with a ‘franchise buddy’. This is an experienced franchisee already running a successful Greene King pub in your region. Your Business Development Manager will introduce you and you’ll be given the chance to spend time in their pub to see how things are done. It’s a brilliant opportunity to learn from someone who has already been through the same process. Your buddy will also support you during the early weeks of your pub’s opening, offering support and practical advice as you settle into your new life.

What Happens During The Four-Day Franchise Welcome?

The Franchise Welcome takes place at Greene King’s Learning and Development Centre in Northampton and typically runs over four days (or three days for Nest franchisees). The training is designed to mirror real-life pub operations as closely as possible. The centre includes a training ‘rig’ room with computers and tills set up to allow franchisees to practise cash management, using the till systems and handling stock orders. There’s also a training cellar, where you’ll learn how to care for cask ale, clean beer lines and gain useful insight into Greene King’s beers with guidance from the Brewing and Brands team. In addition to the practical elements, the Induction also covers the business side of running a pub, including the financial responsibilities that come with being self-employed.

For Hive franchisees there is an additional practical kitchen day where you will cook through the menu and learn how to manage food prep during busy periods.

What Support Is There After I Receive The Keys To My Pub?

It’s at key handover (the exciting bit) that things really start to feel real. From this point, it’s a countdown to opening: five days for Nest franchise pubs and nine days for Hive Pubs. Ahead of launch you’ll be invited to join a Teams call where you’ll be introduced to the trainers who will support you through your handover and launch period. During the countdown to launch, Greene King provides a structured on-site training programme, with support from experienced training staff, to get you ready for opening. Think of it as a trial run, giving you the chance to practise everything from stocking the bar and managing orders to organising glassware and receiving deliveries. You’ll also soft launch your new pub to friends, family and members of the local community, which is a brilliant opportunity to iron out any wrinkles before the official opening.

What If I Need Anything After Launch?

The help and support does not stop when your doors open. Well in advance of receiving your keys, you’ll be added to a dedicated WhatsApp group with the training team, your Business Development Manager, your franchise buddy and the Learning Experience Manager. This will be your ‘go-to’ team for any questions or guidance in the lead-up to handover and during those first few weeks. As you settle in and get more confident, they will step back, leaving you and your franchise buddy to continue the mentorship and grow your skills together.

A few weeks after launch your Learning Experience Manager will visit to see how things are progressing. They’ll review your 100 Days Workbook (the checklist you received during your induction to guide your first 100 days) and help with any issues.

Is There Any On-Going Training?

Once your pub is open, you’ll keep building on your knowledge as you go, with Greene King supporting you along the way. Most ongoing development is delivered through the Attensi platform, which contains training content that is easy to dip into and designed to fit around busy pub life.

Refresher courses in key areas such as fire safety, allergens and licensing laws are delivered on a regular cycle, with alerts to remind you when it’s time to update your knowledge. There are also in-person workshops, webinars and a central hub of resources to access as and when you need them.
