What Happens During The Franchise Welcome?
Taking the plunge and deciding to run your own pub is an exciting, life-changing move. But alongside that excitement often comes a more practical question: how do I learn to do everything I need to know? Because running a pub isn’t just about pulling the perfect pint (although that certainly helps). There’s stock to manage, systems to get to grips with, processes to follow and customers to keep happy. It’s only natural to want a clear picture of the training you’ll receive before you’re handed the keys to your dream pub.
With Greene King Pub Partners the focus is on preparing you properly. Training is designed to grow your confidence step-by-step, combining self-guided online modules with hands-on learning in your own pub, as well as an immersive Franchise Welcome at Greene King’s Learning and Development Centre in Northampton.
Is The Franchise Welcome The Same For Everyone?
Not quite, because not every pub runs the same way. Nest pubs tend to be lively, drink-led venues, often found in busy high street locations. They focus on a strong drink offering, live sport and a vibrant atmosphere. The food is simple, typically pizza, to keep things easy to manage.
Hive pubs are more community centred. Traditionally the dependable local where people meet for drinks, family meals and occasions. The food offering is broader and the entertainment calendar is varied.
Because of this, the training reflects what you’ll need to know in your day-to-day role. Nest franchisees complete three days of induction, while Hive franchisees take part in a fourth day that dives deeper into food and kitchen operations.
What Does A Typical Franchise Welcome Day Look Like?
If you’re worried about being shut away in a stuffy room, counting down the minutes until the next coffee break… don’t. Each day is a balance of learning and doing. You will be guided by the Learning & Development Partners, who lead the sessions and keep everything grounded, practical and easy to follow. This induction is designed to take you from curious beginner to confident operator by giving you a clear, hands-on introduction to what running your own pub involves.
Rather than overwhelming you with lots of information, the induction is structured around building your understanding step-by-step. You’ll work through a series of modules, supported by workbooks and checklists to help you track what you’ve covered and note anything you might want to re-visit later.
Will I Get Hands-On Experience During The Franchise Welcome?
Yes! And this is where your training will really come to life.
The Learning and Development Centre includes a fully equipped ‘rig room,’ which is set up to replicate the systems you’ll be using in your pub. It’s your chance to get comfortable with the mechanics of running things behind the bar.
You’ll spend time getting to grips with tills and computer systems, learn how to handle transactions smoothly and manage cash confidently. From there, you’ll move into stock management, where you’ll learn how to place orders, check deliveries when they arrive and keep everything organised.
It’s practical, interactive and a lot more engaging than simply being told how things work.
What About The Drink Side Of Things?
That’s covered too! There’s a dedicated training cellar at the centre which gives you a proper insight into what goes on below the bar. Here you’ll learn how to look after cask ales, including how to keep them in tip top condition and serve them properly. You will also cover essential maintenance procedures like line cleaning, understanding how often it needs to be done and why it matters. Along the way, you will build your knowledge of Greene King beers with support from the Brewing and Brands team, which definitely comes in handy when customers start asking you questions.
And The Food Side? What If I’m Looking To Run A Hive Pub?
If you’re planning to take the reins of a Hive pub, your fourth day is all about food.
This is a fully practical day where you’ll spend time preparing ingredients and working through the multiple dishes on the menu, getting a feel for how a kitchen operates during service. It’s not designed to turn you into a chef overnight, but it will help you to understand the pace, coordination and standards involved, so you can confidently manage your team and maintain quality.
For Nest franchisees, the food element is more streamlined, reflecting the simpler menu. You will still cover key areas like food hygiene and health and safety, ensuring you are fully equipped to run things properly.
Will The Franchise Welcome Cover The Business Side Too?
Yes. This is a crucial part of the event. Running a pub means running a business, so you will spend time getting to grips with the numbers and responsibilities that come with being self-employed. This includes understanding labour control (how to run an efficient team delivering great customer service but keeping your business profitable), managing a team and getting comfortable with the financial side of things.
Some of this training will be delivered by hospitality specialists who bring with them expertise in areas like accounting, payroll and stock-taking. It’s all explained in a way that is practical and relevant, so you can see exactly how it applies to your pub.
What If I Don’t Take Everything In?
That’s completely normal and it’s built into the process. The workbooks and checklists you complete during the induction help highlight any areas where you might need further support. That’s where your wider support network comes in. As part of the training process, you will be paired with an experienced ‘franchisee buddy’ in your local area who is already running a Greene King pub. They will have been through the same process, asked the same questions and learned the same lessons, making them a brilliant source of practical advice.
Greene King will also continue to support you with training in your pub setting and via a WhatsApp group, so you have ongoing support and access to experienced professionals as and when you need help.
So… Will I Feel Ready By The End of It?
You’ll feel prepared, supported and much more confident about what lies ahead. You won’t know absolutely everything - and you’re not expected to - but you will have a strong foundation, hands-on experience and a clear understanding of how your pub operates. Just as importantly, you’ll know where to turn for help when you need it.
