The Challenge

Originally from Portugal, Anna Carvalho and Bruno Cardoso built their hospitality careers working in Greene King managed pubs for over ten years. During that time, they developed strong operational knowledge, leadership skills and a clear ambition: to one day run their own pub. However, moving from employment to running a business is a significant step. They wanted the independence of being their own bosses, while still having the structure and security of expert guidance behind them. Finding the right opportunity — one that combined freedom with meaningful business support — was essential. When the chance arose to become franchisees at The Prince of Wales in Oxford, they recognised it as the perfect balance. As Anna explains, it offered “the best of both worlds” — the independence of running their own pub, with the backing of an experienced pub company.

The Solution

Greene King Pub Partners provided the framework and investment to set them up for success. The pub underwent targeted improvements, with careful attention given to the areas of the business that needed strengthening. This strategic investment ensured the site looked its best and was positioned to thrive in a competitive local market. Just as important as the physical improvements has been the ongoing operational support. Their BDM maintains close and regular contact, offering advice when needed while giving them the autonomy to lead day-to-day decisions. That balance — being available without being intrusive — has been key. Behind the scenes, strong logistics and support teams ensure stock, systems and processes run smoothly. For Anna and Bruno, knowing that reliable back-end support is always in place allows them to stay focused on what matters most; the front of house, their customers, and growing local trade.

The Result

Today, The Prince of Wales is a thriving, inclusive community pub. Anna and Bruno have the freedom to shape its personality, bringing their own energy and cultural understanding into the business. One of their proudest achievements is creating a welcoming space for Oxford’s diverse community. The pub brings together British, Irish and Brazilian guests, with a particularly strong connection to the city’s Brazilian community. Being able to speak the same language helps create an environment where customers feel genuinely welcome. With strong business support, targeted investment, and the freedom to lead with their own vision, Anna and Bruno are building not just a successful pub, but a true community hub at the heart of local trade. Originally from Portugal, Anna Carvalho and Bruno Cardoso have been working together in Greene King managed pubs for over a decade. When the chance came to run their own pub and become franchisees of The Prince of Wales in Oxford, it was an opportunity they could not refuse.

Bruno – “The support, the knowledge, the experience by Greene King really makes a massive impact on our success. The pub looks amazing and they targeted every single point that needed improving in this business.

Ana – “It was the best of the two worlds — managed houses or being your own boss and running your own pub — and it didn’t need much convincing. The opportunity sounded amazing.”

Ana – “The current BDM — I worked with Alex before — we almost talk every day, sometimes even just by message. He’s there if we need him and he lets us do our job. He truly knows that we want to succeed and is there and available. Things happen quickly.

Bruno – “The support team actually supports, especially logistic support — it’s amazing. It’s fast, it’s effective. That’s what keeps us here at the front of the business, knowing that the back support is there all the time.”

Bruno – “There’s freedom to put input into the decisions we make daily, and our vision as well, towards that success.” “What we’re most proud of here is that we bring the whole community together — the British, the Irish, Brazilians. There is a big Brazilian community in Oxford, and they all come to this pub. They all enjoy the moment they are in the pub, which is amazing. And the fact that we speak the same language opens the doors for them.”

Ana – “They do feel welcome. [Greene King have allowed us] to run your pub with your own personality and be your own boss.”
